Design and Features
Design-wise, the MB2120 ($261.00 on Amazon) has the same look as other Maxify printers. It comes with a 250-sheet cassette paper, and no versatile, or override, tray, while mb2720 comes with two 250-sheet cassettes. MB2120 provides only half the input capacity of MB5420 as well.
At 10.3 by 18.3 by 18.1 inches (HWD) and weighing 23.2 pounds, the MB2120 has the same footprint as all other Maxify all-in-ones (AIO) printers, including the MB2720 and Canon Maxify MB2020 ($109.99 at Canon), which replaces the MB2120. All of these models come with a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADFs). But the mb5000-series model has duplexing ADFs, and the MB2000 engine does not. Duplex ADF has the ability to scan two-sided documents automatically, without you having to flip pages manually. To get an automatic duplex ADF, you must upgrade to MB5120 or mb5420 two drawers.
While the MB2720 is equipped with a 3-inch touchscreen to configure the machine and prints from and scans to cloud sites and USB thumb drives, as well as other walk-ups, or free PCs, tasks, the MB2120 has only a 2.5-inch non-touch LCD. The screen anchors a larger control panel with several buttons for navigation and other functions, as well as some status indicators.
Mobile Connectivity and Printing
Basic connectivity options include Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and direct USB connections. Keep in mind with the last option that your printer is not connected to the Internet, and therefore cannot take advantage of some of the cloud and mobile features of MB2120.
Many of today’s office printers, including entry-level models like this one, come with peer-to-peer protocols such as Wi-Fi Direct and near-field communication (NFC) for connecting your mobile devices to the printer without either device being part of a network.
Print Speed
During our tests on a Windows 10 testbed with an Intel Core i5 processor, while printing our lightly formatted text document, the MB2120’s first-page-out time was below Canon’s rating (8 seconds) and it completed the job a little faster (20ppm).
This time, though, there was only a 1.6ppm difference between this Maxify and the WorkForce WF-2760 (6.2ppm), which would be a shortcoming on a machine with a higher volume rating, but which matters less here. In addition, the MB2120 printed our 4-by-6-inch test photos at the rate of one every 43 seconds, an average time among the Maxifys we’ve tested lately, and 23 seconds faster than Epson’s comparable WF-2760 AIO.
Running Costs
As with its sibling, the MB2720, the MB2120’s running costs are 2.7 cents per monochrome page and 8.1 cents per color page, which we derive by dividing the price of the ink tanks by the manufacturer’s stated yield size, and then applying some additional simple arithmetic. To get a lower cost per page from a Maxify, you’d need to step up to one of the MB5000-series models such as the MB5150, or perhaps the Editors’ Choice Maxify MB5420. With the higher-yield ink tanks these printers support, the cost per page drops to 1.5 cents per monochrome pages and 7.1 cents for color.
By comparison, when you use the highest-yield tanks with Epson’s WF-2760, the running costs are 6 cents per black-and-white page and a whopping 17.3 for color. Stepping up to the one-drawer Maxify MB5120 will cost you between $150 and $180, and the two-drawer MB5420 runs from about $250 to $280 or more, depending on where you buy it. While these price differences may seem significant, if you print more than, say, 1,000 pages each month, you may want to look at a higher-end Maxify.
Output Quality
As you’d expect from nearly any Canon inkjet printer, photos looked nearly as good as, and in some cases better than, what you get from most other business-oriented inkjets—good enough for most business applications, such as, say, insurance adjustors’ before and after shots, and perhaps even the keeper photo now and then. This is not, however, a photo printer, and many photo-centric printers, including Canon’s own five- and six-ink photo-ready Pixmas (the Canon Pixma MG7720 Wireless All-in-One comes to mind), print better photos.
Conclusion
The Canon Maxify MB2120 Wireless Home Office Inkjet Printer over the MB2720. The additional 250-sheet paper cassette alone is well worth $20 unless of course that extra couple of inches of height make the MB2720 too tall for its intended location. If you seldom, if ever, change your print media, say from letter size to snapshot (4 by 6 inches), and if your print and copy loads are light and you expect them to stay that way, then the MB2120 might be a better choice. Otherwise, the MB2720 is worth stronger consideration.
