Canon PIXMA G2200 Series Reviews- The Canon Pixma G2200 MegaTank All-in-One Printer offers very low running costs (thanks to refilling tanks for bottled ink) and good print quality, especially for text and photos. The G2200’s feature set is basic, making it the best for light home use; it lacks the automatic document feeder (ADF), Ethernet, and fax capabilities, all of which you’ll find on the cheaper Brother MFC-J985DW Editor’s Choice.
Design and Features
The G2200 is a three-function all-in-one printer, which can print, scan, and copy but cannot send faxes. It measures a fairly compact 6.4 by 17.5 by 13.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 13.5 pounds. What is strikingly absent is the display. To the right of the Power button is a small light; Part of the setup process involves holding the button until the light flashes green in a certain pattern. Other buttons include Stop and Start for scanning or copying black and color.
Paper handling is limited to the 100-sheet rear feeder, which can hold 20 sheets of 4-by-6 photo paper or ten sheets of 5-by-7 photo paper. The G2200 does not have an automatic duplexer for two-sided printing. Above is a letter-size flatbed scanner, but no ADF.
Bottles and Ink Tanks
Canon’s approach to keeping ink costs down for its MegaTank line is to use bottled ink instead of cartridges. Adding ink is an easy procedure. Four ink tanks are installed into the printer, the black tank on the left of the output tray and three tanks for color ink (yellow, cyan, and magenta) on the right.
To fill a tank, remove the stopper, open the ink bottle for the tank in question, and insert the bottle nozzle into the hole at the top of the tank. You then squeeze the bottle gently until it is empty (which can take a few minutes) and the tank is full. Even with my treatment, I did get a little ink on my thumb—perhaps when changing the cap on one of the tanks—and minor stains on my clothes, which I luckily noticed quickly enough that I could wash them off.
Mobile Printing Features
The G2200 is limited to connecting directly to a computer via USB. Both add the two high-end MegaTank printers, the Canon Pixma G3200 Wireless MegaTank All-in-One and the Canon Pixma G4200 Wireless MegaTank All-in-One Wi-Fi connectivity, as does the Epson ET-2550. The Brother MFC-J985DW includes USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet support. I tested the G2200 over a USB connection with the drivers installed on a PC running Windows 10 Professional.
Print Speed
In short, the G2200 is slow. A trait shared with Canon’s other MegaTank printers. In printing the text-only (Word) portion of our business application suite, the average is 7.1 pages per minute (ppm), close enough to the rated speed of 8.8ppm for monochrome printing.
In our full business printing suite, which includes PDF, PowerPoint, and Excel files in addition to the Word as mentioned above documents, the average is only 3.1 ppm. When we tested the Brother MFC-J985DW using our old test protocol, we couldn’t immediately compare its speed to the G2200, but Brother has a slightly higher rated speed (12ppm). The same thing happened to the Epson ET-2550, with a rating of 9ppm.
Output Quality
Print quality highlights the G2200, with above-par text, photos, and average graphics. Text is great for an inkjet and should be fine for any business use, except for those requiring very small fonts.
With the graphics, some of the backgrounds appear a bit faded, and some show traces of streaks (a regular pattern of faint stripes). The G2200 performs well with thin colored lines and distinguishing between similar tones. Graphic quality is good enough to use in PowerPoint handouts.
The photo quality is above standard for an inkjet. Colors are generally rich and well saturated. There is a slight loss of detail in some of the bright areas. Our monochrome test prints show some color.
Operating costs
Based on Canon’s price and yield figures for its ink bottles, the G2200 has very low operating costs: only 0.3 cents per black page and 0.8 cents per color page. (Each bottle is available in only one size; Canon sells black ink, with a yield value of 6,000 pages, for $17.99, and each of the three colors, with a yield of 7,000 pages, for $11.99.)
This is the same as the other MegaTank printers. And are nearly identical to Epson EcoTank printers such as the ET-2550 and ET-3660 (0.3 cents per black page and 0.9 cents per color page). Its operating costs are also significantly lower than the Brother MFC-J985DW (1 cent per black page and 4.7 cents per color page).
Conclusion
Thanks to its bottled ink, the Canon Pixma G2200 MegaTank All-in-One Printer provides meager running costs. However, the G2200 has some features, as it is limited to USB connectivity and lacks ADF, fax, and duplexer.
The Epson ET-2550, priced similarly to the G2200, shares low operating costs and adds Wi-Fi. However, if you’re okay with USB connectivity, the G2200 gives you a basic all-in-one printer with good output quality and a meager cost per page for both black and color printing.
