Canon PIXMA iP100 Series Reviews Printers– Built for portability, the Canon PIXMA iP100 promises to produce lab-quality prints, although its specifications are better suited for office printing. This is a four-color printer with separate ink cartridges for pigment black and dye-based color inks (cyan, magenta, and yellow, and photo black to enhance darker tones in photo prints). ChromaLife 100 color inks promise long-lasting photo prints on Canon photo papers (although test results are not published on the Wilhelm Research website).

Physically, the iP100 is similar to its predecessor, the iP90, but slightly larger and heavier. However, it is still a suitable laptop add-on for today’s road warriors and comes with a battery that plugs into the back and charges from the printer’s mains.
The IP100 enclosure has brushed metal with glossy black side panels. The top rises up to provide an input tray that can hold up to 50 sheets of plain office paper. In practice, it is best to feed one or two sheets at a time to avoid photo paper jams, but this did not happen in our tests.

Power is supplied to an outlet on the left panel, while the right panel has USB A and B ports and an infrared port for direct printing from mobile devices such as camera phones. Direct printing is supported from PictBridge-enabled digital cameras, and the iP100 can be connected to a computer via a USB cable. An optional Bluetooth module (BU-30) is available for connecting to the USB port, but there is no built-in card reader for direct printing from camera memory cards.
Canon has increased the density of nozzles in the print head from 1,088 to 1,856 to improve print quality, and the new model is faster than its predecessor, especially when printing documents. The PIXMA iP100 has a 12-month warranty.

The printer is easy to set up, and the instructions in the Quick Start Guide and the diagrams on the double-sized A3 sheet supplied with the printer are very clear and easy to use. The first step is to plug the printer into an electrical outlet, then turn it on and install the printhead. To do this, you must remove the metal clip that surrounds the printhead carriage before you can attach it.

After installing the ink cartridges, the clip can be closed and locked in place. Then the cover page is loaded and the printer turns off while installing the software. It will take about five minutes, during which time you can connect the USB cable to your computer.

When the ink cartridge is used up, the warning light on the printer control panel will blink orange. Initially, blinking occurs at approximately three-second intervals and indicates low ink. When the flashing frequency reaches 1 second at 17 times intervals, the ink has run out and the cartridge needs to be replaced.
Unfortunately, the ink level monitor is too small to provide useful information about the amount of ink remaining in the cartridges, and you cannot access this information from the printer driver. When the ink level is low and ink is low, icons will appear on the ink level indicator of the corresponding cartridge, but they are still quite small.

Without an infrared device (or Bluetooth device and antenna) on hand, Photo Review was unable to test the wireless capabilities of the printer in question. However, we were able to connect it to our computer and print via Photoshop CS4 and other editing applications. Unfortunately, the ICC profiles loaded with the printer driver had no obvious relation to any Canon documents, so the exercise was a little pointless.

Software
The software disc contains drivers for Windows and Macintosh, as well as the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX application software and the Online User’s Guide. Easy-PhotoPrint EX is a highly automated wizard-based application that offers several options for custom settings, but is otherwise attractive in design.

Performance and cost
Document print quality with the black pigment ink cartridge was clean and almost laser-quality. Color documents also print very well with solid colors and accurate registration of text against a colored background.

Photo quality on A4 high definition paper (HR-101N) varied, but even the best of our test prints looked very ordinary when compared to prints made on specialty photo paper. The dynamic range (from white to black) was significantly lower and the colors lacked “effect” and accuracy. The subtleties of tone have almost completely disappeared, and images that are just a little too saturated are printed with any real effect.
On Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, the print quality was almost as good as a good photo lab. Even better quality was achieved when printing with Photo Paper Pro II. The main problem for photographers is the lack of control from the included software and the restrictions it imposes on the use of ICC profiles. Printing using a more advanced image editor that provides full ICC profile support goes a long way towards addressing these shortcomings.
In our tests, it took the review unit less than two minutes to print an A4 photo on high definition paper (HR-101N) with a narrow white border, including about six seconds of exposure. A4 size Photo Paper Pro II (Canon High-Quality Glossy Paper) averaged two minutes 47 seconds to print.

The average print time for a Photo Paper Plus Glossy II postcard was 58 seconds. The average document print speed was slightly lower than Canon’s stated: 20ppm black or 14ppm color.
The MSRP for color and black ink cartridges are $ 34.50 and $ 17.50, respectively. The 4 “x 6” Photo Paper Plus Glossy II retails for $ 9.96 for a 20-sheet pack, while the Photo Paper Pro II has a suggested retail price of $ 15.95 for a 20-sheet pack. 20-sheet A4 paper reams sell for a suggested retail price of $ 16.45 for Photo Paper Plus Glossy II and $ 23.95 for Photo Paper Pro II.
Manufacturers tend to overestimate the ink capabilities of photo printers, and we didn’t have enough paper to print until we ran out of both cartridges. However, we estimate that ink costs around 40 cents for a 4 “x 6” color photo and $ 1.50 for printing A4 photos. Assuming no waste paper, this will cost approximately $ 1.20 to $ 1.20 per print for a postcard-sized photo and $ 2.30 to $ 2.70 for an A4 print.
It gives you access to the printer driver using the Check Ink Usage option in the Maintenance menu, which allows you to reduce the amount of black ink for printing through an image editor, print the amount of black ink with color ink, or print black ink. Second, it can save you time when a black ink cartridge is low on ink and cannot be replaced immediately. In any case, there are warnings about possible print quality deterioration.

Result
The Canon PIXMA iP100 combines an attractive design with portability and good performance. The high-resolution print head allows you to print very good photos and documents. Setting up is straightforward, and while it’s limited for advanced photographers, the iP100 will provide most of the features you need for the average consumer.
The purchase price of this printer is relatively high in terms of features, especially as it is a similarly sized HP mobile printer that sells for about a quarter of the iP 100’s price. With memory card slots not available on the iP100.
Canon offers a Bluetooth interface (BU 30; MSRP $ 69) and a car power adapter/charger (PU-200U; MSRP $ 129) as accessories for the iP100. However, you will need to find a carrying bag elsewhere to protect the printer on the go.
