One of the advantages that iX6820 has compared to the Epson WF-7010 is the support of Wi-Fi. The app also offers several mobile print features, including cloud printing, AirPrint support, and print support from Android and iOS phones and tablets via Wi-Fi, using the free Canon app. Note that for all these mobile printing features to work, you have to connect the printer directly to the network.Paper processing is not a strong thing. The good news is that you can print on both tabloid-size and super tabloid-sized paper, on up to 13 by 19 inches. Unfortunately, the printer only offers one paper tray, which means you can’t store both the zip size and the larger size of the paper loaded at the same time. There are also no duplexers (for two-way printing), even as an option.
Having only one tray makes the PIXMA iX6820 best suited as a second printer in addition to the letter-sized printer you already have. In addition, the tray can only hold 150 sheets, which will be a little small if it is just a printer. As an additional printer for a large output size, however, this should not be a problem. For comparison, the EPSON WF-7010 offers a 2,250-leaf tray and duplexer and can handle paper 13 by 44 inches.
Installation
As of 6.3 at 23 by 12.3 inches (HWD), the PIXMA iX6820 is slightly larger than most jets. However, if you have room for it, the setting is pretty standard. I ran into a small problem with Windows Vista security features keeping the program setting running. At the time of writing, Canon is still investigating this issue, but the company can come up with an easy way to install fixed drivers. If you experience the same installation problem, you should be able to get a solution by calling the Canon Technical Support number.
Also, I encountered an unusual, and potentially frustrating, problem. The printer does not offer an LCD-based menu – only buttons and status lights. If you need to change the default network connection settings (which is set to allow the printer to connect with Wi-Fi) to allow it to connect using the Ethernet port instead, you should hold the key and count the flashes on the status of the light.
Unfortunately, Canon does not include this information in the quick start guide and does not transmit the magic decoder ring with the printer. A company spokesperson said that the information is displayed on the screen during a normal setting, but if you missed it, or, as in my case, can’t run the customization program, you’ll be left without instructions on how to get a connected network connection to work. Once you know the trick, however, switch between cable settings and Wi-Fi is easy. A Canon spokesman said the company was exploring options to address the issue.
Speed and quality
For my tests, I connected the printer to a wired network and installed drivers on a system running Windows Vista. In our suite of business applications, it comes in a tolerant but poky, 2.7 pages per minute (ppm). This makes it slightly slower than the Canon iX6520, at 2.9 ppm, and significantly slower than the Epson WF-7010, at 4.0 ppm. It’s much better on photo speed, averaging 59 seconds to 4 by 6.
The yield quality is uneven, with printers printing slightly below par for text and graphics and slightly above the standard for photos. The text output is at the low end of the range for tabloid-capable inkjet printers. Most people will find it suitable for most business needs, as long as you don’t need to use small fonts.
The graphic output is simple enough for internal business use. If you have a very critical eye, you’ll probably find it good enough for PowerPoint handouts and so on. The photos look better than most pharmacy prints, making them surprisingly high quality for printers dedicated to the office.
Obviously, if you want one printer for all your printing needs, the ‘Choice Epson WF-7010’ editor will give you better paper processing than the Canon PIXMA iX6820 Wireless Inkjet Printers, and the best speeds. However, if all you need is a tabloid or super tabloid-sized printer in addition to the font-sized model, then the PIXMA iX6820 can certainly do its job. And if you need to connect to Wi-Fi or need a mobile print feature, it may be more appropriate.
