Canon PIXMA iX7000 Driver Download & Printer Review– The Canon Pixma iX7000 is aimed at the small office market, where plain paper prints are more common and larger page sizes are required for posters, flipcharts, and other business prints. It’s not that this machine can’t produce great still images at a larger size, but that’s not its main function.
As you might expect, this is no small machine. It’s wider than almost all the printers we’ve tested, and when fully open to A3+ printing, it’s almost as deep as it is wide. Fortunately, when printing small sizes, both the input and output trays are visible, saving a lot of space, and the rear tray, which is reserved for photo paper, can be folded down onto the printer’s top cover.
There are three separate paper sources on the Pixma iX7000, with a 250-sheet paper cassette slot at the front, a 20-sheet rear feed tray, and a further 10-sheet manual feed at the front, above the output tray. This makes the machine very versatile, as you can save the plain paper loaded when printing from one of the other two sources.
As you might expect, the controls are minimal, with a large button and indicator for power and a smaller one for paper feed. There’s no front-panel USB socket, which is a bit of a pity, but there are sockets on the back for USB and Ethernet.
Lift the printer lid, and the head bay is visible, holding the two black (text and photo ink) cartridges together with cyan, magenta, and yellow for full four-color printing. Canon’s helpful LED indicator indicates when the cartridge is properly inserted and when the ink is low and needs to be replaced.
However, there is a sixth cartridge, which is positioned under the cover to the left of the printer carriage. Marked Clear, this ink layer is applied by roller to each sheet of plain paper, so Canon’s ‘Lucia’ pigment ink is on the coating and not directly on the paper. Canon claims this produces brighter, more detailed prints on untreated paper.
Support software includes Easy-PhotoPrint, and Easy-Web Print, and drivers are provided for Windows and OS X.
In our tests, we saw a maximum speed of 8.6ppm, printing 20 pages of black text, which is not far from the main numbers. However, in terms of color, we only saw 4.8ppm, a little over half the claimed speed.
These speeds are still not bad for an inkjet engine and hold up well when printing on pages larger than A4. An A3 photo printed on plain paper takes just 45 seconds, an impressive amount of time.
Less impressive is the duplex speed. This printer offers duplex printing as standard, but when we printed a 20-page text document as a 10-page duplex, the speed dropped to 3ppm, taking 6 37 seconds to complete. It is quite slow to achieve office productivity, and it is doubtful that many people will do much duplex printing on this machine.
Many are made of the plain paper print quality of the Pixma iX7000, although we had some doubts. While the text is pitch black, we noticed some missed registrations from one printhead swipe to the next and some spiking around the characters, indicating out of ink. Text printing is not as clean as some of the other Canon machines.
The color graphics are bright and solid, with no hint of pattern trepidation, and impressive. Our test photo prints on plain paper, after the paper has been given time to dry, are also good, although there are slight streaks and a bit of patchiness in the darker areas of the image.
Photo images on Canon photo paper are clean and smooth with good detail, including shadows. A full A3 print shows this machine capable of very decent large-scale photos.
Since the clear coating is used on all plain paper prints, we have included the cost in the cost of black and color pages. A4 black pages came out at 3.1p and color pages at 6.2p. The cost of color is lower than that of most color inkjets, and the cost of black is competitive, so providing your large-size print will not cost you any extra, page by page, although A3 pages will, of course, cost more than A4 to print.
Conclusion
The appeal of the iX7000 on a color laser printer is the same as that of other inkjets. It produces better colors and can print quality photos on glossy photo paper. The reduction is also the same, as a regular laser will be faster and produce better quality black text. Of course, you won’t find an A3 laser for £300, and if size matters in the office.
