The paper processing on the Pixma 6320 has been improved by the control unit. Loading paper can easily be done with the front slide-out tray (125 sheets, letter/regal default tray) and the 20-sheet tray placed on it (maximum paper size 4×6 inches). Because the rear vertical feeder on the previous model is missing, the total paper capacity is reduced, but the printer can accurately lift the wall and save space. It also folds the front of the device instead of the collapsible door for output and automatically extends the paper latch. This open bay represents the unit’s Secure Digital/Memory Stick and Compact Flash card slot. Duplex printing is done automatically, but the letter/A4 flatbed scanner does not have an automatic document feeder (ADF) for long documents. The scanner lid accommodates thick materials with telescopes.
The Pixma 6320 uses six ink systems instead of four ink systems: cyan, magenta, yellow, black and photo black, and photo-grey. With standard consumables, a black page is five cents per page, but the other color is more expensive than the average. Typical cyan, magenta, yellow, and black pages are already very high with 16.6 cpp. Adding a photo black and photo Gray will raise the cost to 19.2 cents. The high yield inks are 4.6 cents per black page, 4-color 12.7 cents, and 6 colors, which provide 13.6 cents of savings, but are slightly more expensive than higher-yield consumables for other tested products.
The black output generated by the Pixma 6320 is darker and sharper in the default settings and even sharper in the best quality settings. On plain paper, the color output appears orange, but it is crisp and accurate on Canon photo paper. Copies and scans are also quite good.
The performance of the Pixma MG6420 is very good for the multi-functional artistic bent. In the test, a monochrome page prints faster than the average on a PC, from 8.4 pages per minute (ppm), to 7.7 p m on a Mac. Photo speed is average. Snapshot size (4 x 6 in.) photos are printed at 2.7 p m on plain paper and 1 or more per minute on glossy photo paper. The entire page picture printed on the Mac page is about 0.6 p m. Both copy and Scan times are very fast compared to the average.
Canon performed a very good job of updating the PIXMA MG series design, making the Pixma 6320 much easier to use than the last generation. Speed and print quality are very good, but ink prices are slightly higher than average. The HP Photosmart 7520 E-all-in-one is the same as the cost, but it contains the ADF if necessary and uses low-value inks.
Editor’s note: This article expands on the ink discussion, showing the cost of a typical four-color page of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, and a page that adds photo black and photo Grays.
