The most unusual feature of the Pixma 8120 is a 3.5-inch, slanted color LCD with a fully integrated touch-detection control on the top lid. The control turns on when it is needed and disappears when it is not. The layout is very similar to the General Control Panel design of canon, including three buttons for selecting the choices displayed on the display. We felt awkward to use with the more traditional navigation/selection buttons (always on).
Although Canon hoped to include an automatic document feeder, the Pixma 8120 is well-equipped in other ways. There are 150-sheet rear feeder for automatic double-sided printing, under-mount trays for plain paper, and 150 sheets for all other media. The 50-sheet output tray automatically opens in the front when you start printing. The scanner lid accommodates thick documents with a telescope. USB, Ethernet, and wireless connections are available. The wireless settings worked perfectly on the PC. However, the printer did not function properly until the USB cable was connected to the Mac. This may be the car of our testbed. However, if you experience a similar problem, you can use USB to fix it. Canon’s Solution Center EX software bundles help you print, scan, and copy tasks and are easy to use.
In our tests, the Pixma mg 8120 was quite fast for inkjet. Google’s text documents (10 pages of plain text and newsletters with grayscale graphics) are crisp and nicely printed on your PC in 8.27 pages per minute (PPM), and 7.87 with the Mac P-M. In the PC platform test, a snapshot-sized color photograph was printed to less than 3ppm on the plain paper, and the Canon’s own photo paper was printed with approximately 2ppm. Larger, high-resolution photos used to test photo printing on a Mac took more than two minutes to medium speed. In addition, the monochrome copy (approx. 17 seconds) and color scan (20 seconds for full-page photos at 600 dpi, 55 seconds for clipped parts of the photo at 1200 dpi) were quick.
The color images and copies usually have an orange tint on the paper (the general trend of the Canon MFP), but the defect is less noticeable on photo papers. A simple black-and-white text copy looks like the original, but the color scan looks somewhat darker.
Other Canon multifunction printers, such as the Pixma MX870 and Pixma 5220, provide the same output and functionality at a lower cost. If you want extra, choose the Canon Pixma mg 8120: A slightly faster speed and a dialog in the Control Panel.
