Canon PIXMA TR8550 Series Reviews Printers– Canon Pixma TR8550 is a comprehensive all-in-one office printer for small businesses. Print invoices and reports automatically with the 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF).
Canon PIXMA TR8550 Price
The incorporation of a fax machine and archive feeder implies that the TR8550 is more costly than different models in the Pixma range, with Canon providing a cost estimate of £199.99 when buying directly from its website.
However, we’ve seen it on Amazon and several other online retailers for close to £160. There’s also a second model, called the Pixma TR7550, which features the same four-in-one, but is about £20 cheaper because it uses a smaller touchscreen control panel.
Canon PIXMA TR8550 Design and features
The TR8550 is perfect for use in a home office where space may be a little tight. Canon has managed to make the four-in-one device extremely compact at 190mm high, 438mm wide and 351mm deep, so it can easily be placed on a table or on a nearby shelf without too much trouble.
In addition to USB and Wi-Fi connectivity, this printer includes an Ethernet port for wired networks and supports Apple’s AirPrint for iOS devices, and Google Cloud print for everyone.
The main paper tray at the bottom of the printer holds only 100 sheets, but there is a second tray at the back with the same capacity. It will also allow you to load envelopes or glossy photo paper when you leave plain A4 office paper in the bottom tray.
Our only minor gripe here is that the touchscreen isn’t very responsive and sometimes requires a firm push to select one of the on-screen menu options. It’s also worth mentioning that the TR8550 uses five separate color ink cartridges when printing. The four conventional inks cyan, magenta, yellow and black are still used for printing photos and graphics, but there are also special black pigment inks that are used purely for printing text.
Canon PIXMA TR8550 Performance
Canon cites speeds of 15 pages per minute for mono printing, 10ppm for color, and 37 seconds for 4×6-inch photo prints. In practice, we recorded speeds of 14ppm for mono, 7ppm for color, and 45 seconds for photo prints, but those speeds are still adequate for use in a small home office.
Pigmented black ink produces good quality for text documents – we feel that text characters are a bit too heavy to pass up for ‘laser quality’, but the TR8550 won’t embarrass you when you’re putting together a business plan for a new internet startup.
Graphics and photo output are excellent, producing highly detailed images with sharp, bold colors that will ensure your presentations and marketing materials look great. However, the five-ink printing process means you have to think carefully about the types of documents you need to create while working at home.
TR8550 Operating costs
As you might expect, using five separate inks means slightly higher operating costs than usual, and Canon has also managed to make the cost calculations quite complicated. Like most printer manufacturers, Canon sells standard and XL size cartridges that provide higher page yields and lower operating costs.
However, it also sells a larger ‘XXL’ cartridge, and it is very confusing to quote a different page yield for each of the five-colored inks. The black pigmented ink cartridge used for text printing costs £11.49 and lasts only 200 pages, which is an incredible 5.7p per page.
The XL cartridge costs £15.49 but doubles the capacity to 400 pages, while the XXL cartridge costs £21.49 and lasts for 600 pages. That brings mono-printing down to 3.9p for the XL cartridge and 3.6p for the XXL – both still relatively high, so the TR8550 wouldn’t be ideal for people who just need to print a lot of letters and simple text documents.
Four XL color cartridges will cost £60 and bring the cost down to a more reasonable 9.2p per page, while four XXL cartridges add up to £82.
