We have always been a fan of Epson’s “small-in-one” printers, such as the XP-640 that we reviewed recently, which provide very compact printers for home users, and now Canon is entering the scene with the latest addition to its range of printers PIXMA Photographic. Like other models in the PIXMA Range, the compact Pixma TS8054 focuses on high-quality photographic printing, with a printing mechanism that uses six different ink cartridges. Standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks are complemented by a gray ink that helps improve contrast and subtle tonal gradations within photographs, while the sixth cartridge provides a special pigmented black ink That is used to print the text.
That quality has a cost though, and the TS8054 costs £179.99 quite heavy if purchased directly from Canon, although you can find less if you shop online. For example, you can buy Pixma TS8054 for £149.99 from Amazon.
This comes with only “Ink Configuration “, and a package with complete cartridges will cost £229.99, even from Amazon. See the management costs below for more information.
Canon states that the new TS8054 is smaller than 30% compared to previous models in the range, and with a height of 139 mm, 372 mm wide and 324 mm deep is certainly small enough to sit on a desk or a shelf of an office or bedroom do The space is a little tight. However, Canon is able to pack many useful features that help to justify the relatively high cost of the printer. In addition to the 9600×2400 dpi printing, the TS8054 includes a 2400×4800 dpi scanner and copier.
The main paper tray contains 100 sheets of A4 paper, but its focus on the photographic print means that there is a second tray containing 20 sheets of photographic paper and a third tray for printing on CDs and other types of discs. In addition to standard USB and Wi-Fi connections, TS8054 also supports AirPrint for Apple IOS devices, while Canon’s Cloud Link feature allows you to print photos from social media such as Instagram.
The complexity of the six-ink printing process means that TS8054 is not the fastest printer in circulation. Canon offers a speed of 15 pages per minute for text documents, 10 ppm for color graphics and 21 seconds for a postcard print 10×15 cm. We actually approached 12ppm for the text and at 7ppm for the graphics, while our postcard prints required 30 seconds. However, these speeds should still be perfectly adequate for most home users and, of course, the five inks used for photographic printing ensured that our test prints were extremely Good, with crisp and vivid colors and subtle and attractive flesh tones in portrait photography.
Oddly enough, however, the text output using the standard printer’s quality setting was a bit heavier than we expected, and lacked the almost laser quality smoothness that you can now get from some jet printers of Ink. It will be fine for most routine documents, but if you really need a high quality text, you may want to go to the slightly slower end setting.
We were expecting the six-ink mechanism to actually increase TS8054 management costs, but we actually got a pleasant surprise here. If you shop at Amazon you can find the black pigmented ink (300 pages) for about £11.20, which works at 3.7 pence per page for text printing. This is pretty steep, but if you opt for the high-performance XL cartridge-£12.53 and 500 pages-you get to a 2, much more reasonable 5p per page.
A series of five standard color cartridges comes in at around £45.00, though Canon quotes a different number of pages per single color cartridge, which makes calculations of costs rather complicated. After a bit of headaches and calculations with Excel, we estimate that color printing with standard cartridges will work at about 10.6 points per page, which is located in the higher end of average printing costs.
